Women and Youth in NgorOkpala Empowerment (WYNE) Project
Globally, discriminatory practices against women have been a major concern and efforts are being made to alleviate it. With declaration for action by different conferences and summits since 1990 till date, elimination of every forms of discrimination against women has become very important and imperative.
CFHI was awarded a grant under the US Consulate General Small Grant Programme, to reduce to reduce discriminatory practices and poverty levels of women and Youth in NgorOkpala community of Imo State. NgorOkpala, which is one of the twenty-seven Local Governments in Imo state Nigeria is still rated as one of the areas with high number of discriminatory practices ranging from Female Genital Mutilation to other Wicked Widowhood practices.
10 community dialogues (forums) were organized to reach community members with Operation-Know-Your-Right Campaign on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Child marriage, Violence against women, Land disinheritance, Gender (Son) preference, Incest, rape and harmful widowhood practices thereby empowering 735 women and 28 youths with knowledge of their rights. At the end of each community forum, resolutions on these harmful practices were reached leading to the development of a community charter that was signed by the paramounttraditional ruler of the town and representatives of the villages that make up the town. CFHI achieved this success story through an approach of utilizing advocacy to key influencers and gate keepers, community wide sensitizations and campaigns, human right educational approach and economic empowerment for women and youths.
